VI COMMANDO

Fus. James Wilson Murray, formerly of the 5^th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, served in No.5 Troop and then No.6 Troop of No.6 Commando from the formation of the Commando on 26^th July 1940.

Fus. James Murray was reported as missing on 8th January 1943 following the aborted attack on Green Hill on the previous day, but returned to the commando later having evaded capture.

Fus. James Wilson Murray was reported as being Killed In Action (KIA) on 12th June 1944, aged 27 years, at Le Plain during the 12^th Parachute Division attack on Bréville-les-Monts, when a shell caused a direct hit on the cookhouse

James was the son of William Robert and Mary Jane Murray, of Hopwood, Heywood, Lancashire. Ranville War Cemetry (Calvados, Normandy, France). Grave VA.G.3.

The inscription on his headstone reads:

‘The pain of life has past, His warfare o’er. Death behind is cast, Suffering is nor more.’

He was awarded:
